01Technical SEO

Your inventory sells before Google finishes crawling it

A store carrying 600 units with monthly turn publishes and retires roughly 600 pages a month. Search engines allocate a finite crawl budget to your domain, and on most dealer sites a large share of it is spent on vehicles that are already gone.

The result is the pattern every dealer recognizes and nobody can name: new arrivals take weeks to show up in search, sold units keep ranking for months, and nothing anybody does to the homepage changes either.

This is the page where we get specific about that, including what is fixable on a platform you are not allowed to edit and what genuinely is not.

What the technical work covers

  • VDP indexation at scaleGetting inventory pages crawled while the unit is still on the lot, rather than weeks after it sold. This is the single highest-value technical item on a dealer site.
  • Sold-unit retirement policyWhat happens to a VDP the day the car sells. Done badly it becomes a soft 404 or a crawl trap. Done properly it either redirects to something relevant or returns a clean status and leaves the index quietly.
  • Crawl budget allocationWorking out where crawl is actually going today, and moving it away from filter permutations, expired stock and parameter noise toward pages that can still sell something.
  • SRP versus VDP intentSearch results pages serve browse intent and detail pages serve specific intent. Treating them the same wastes both. They need different targeting, different depth and different internal linking.
  • Duplicate platform contentIdentifying where your pages are identical to every other store on your platform, and where differentiation is actually possible within the template.
  • Premium indexingPaid indexing APIs so new placements and new pages get crawled in days rather than waiting on organic discovery.
07In plain terms

Crawl budget, explained without the jargon

Search engines will not crawl every page of every site every day. They allocate each domain a rough budget of attention based on how large it is, how often it changes, how fast it responds and how important it appears. That budget is finite and you cannot buy more of it.

On a forty-page business site this is irrelevant. On a dealer site with 600 vehicles turning over monthly, plus every filter combination the search results page can generate, it is the central technical constraint. You are asking for a large amount of crawling and most of what you are offering has a shelf life of a few weeks.

So the job is not to get more crawl budget. It is to stop wasting the budget you have. Every request spent on a car that sold in March is a request not spent on the one that landed yesterday, and the one that landed yesterday is the one with gross still attached to it.

That is why sold-unit handling matters far more than it sounds like it should. It is not tidiness. It is the difference between your new arrivals being found in days and being found after they have already gone.

Crawl spent on a car that sold in March is crawl not spent on the one that landed yesterday.
08Why dealers are different

What is fixable when you cannot touch the platform

This is the question every franchise dealer asks and almost no agency answers honestly, so here is the honest version. On a mandated platform, a meaningful share of technical SEO is genuinely outside your control, and anyone claiming otherwise has not worked on one.

What we can usually establish and act on without any platform access: how your inventory pages are actually being crawled and indexed today, what is happening to sold units, where crawl budget is leaking, which pages are duplicated across every store on your platform, and which of your search results pages are competing with each other.

What typically requires your provider: template changes, canonical logic, status codes on retired units, and the structure of your search results pages. For each of those we write the exact request in the language their support queue expects, so it comes back actioned rather than marked unsupported.

And what is often simply unavailable on a locked platform, which we will tell you plainly rather than billing you to attempt: wholesale URL restructuring, custom templates per model, and anything requiring server configuration. When we hit one of those we say so and move the effort to a lever that is actually available, usually authority, content or the service side.

09Questions

Questions about this service

What is VDP indexation and why does it matter?

A VDP is a vehicle detail page, the page for one specific car. Indexation is whether search engines have crawled and stored it. It matters because a VDP that gets indexed three weeks after the car sold produced nothing, and on a store with monthly inventory turn that is the normal outcome unless someone works on it.

What should happen to a VDP when the car sells?

It should stop being a live page that returns a success status with no vehicle on it, because that is a soft 404 and it wastes crawl budget indefinitely. The two defensible options are a redirect to a relevant search results page or a similar unit, or a clean gone status that lets it leave the index. Which one depends on your platform.

Can you do this if we are on a mandated OEM platform?

Partly, and we are specific about which parts. Diagnosis, crawl analysis and indexation monitoring need no access at all. Template and status code changes need your provider, and we write those requests for you. A few things are genuinely unavailable, and we say so rather than billing you to try.

Do you need access to our site or DMS?

No. We have no access to either and never claim to. Everything diagnostic is done from the outside, and everything that needs inside access is handed to you as a written request for your provider.

How is SRP different from VDP for SEO purposes?

A search results page serves someone browsing a category, so it should target the category-level search and stay stable over time. A detail page serves someone who has narrowed to one vehicle and has a lifespan of weeks. The first is where you build lasting ranking; the second is where you capture immediate intent.

Is technical SEO included in every tier?

The on-page technical audit is included from Golden upward, along with premium indexing and content gap analysis. Basic and Silver do not include it, which is one of several reasons we do not recommend those tiers for dealerships.
